There are no rules

I have personally seen so much change in fashion. I will never forget the day I was attending a conference and the influencer who was speaking blurted out “There are no rules in fashion!” Everyone erupted in applause. It was official. No more rules.
There are a few things I still think we all need to think about when it comes to fashion. These aren’t necessarily rules but more like guidelines. Here are my top three:

1. Fit is key. Just because you can get it on doesn’t mean it fits. I see women wearing clothing that is too small (that makes them look larger) and wearing things too big (and that makes you look larger or sloppy). When in doubt it is best to size up.

The bottom line is that ready-to-wear isn’t ready to wear. Only 5% of the population can put something on and it “fits.”

Please do NOT get caught up on the number on the hang tag. I’ve seen women refuse to purchase something that looked beautiful on them but it was a size up from what they normally wear. Who cares? No one sees the number. Cut it out of the garment if it bothers you. What is most important is how it looks on you. You need to find an alterations specialist who can make your clothing look fabulous on you. When you make adjustments, your clothing actually looks more expensive.

Tomorrow in my Fashion Friday, I am with my alteration’s specialist and friend Sherry Yang. She talks us through the top 5 most common alterations. You won’t want to miss it. You will even find out a the number one reason why I need to go to get alterations.

2. Be Confident in what you wear. I also believe you can wear what you want at any age. As long as it makes you happy and you feel confident. Everything in your closet should make you feel like a million bucks. If it doesn’t, why is it in there? And Comfortable = Confident.

3. Follow dress codes on invitations. If I’m invited to a wedding and the invitation says black tie, I’m not going to show up in jeans. This is not your gig so follow the dress code or don’t go.

At the end of the day, fashion is personal. Confidence transcends any fashion rules. Let what you wear spark joy. Life is short – have Fun with your Fashion!
