3 Ways to Make Your Health a Priority

It can be so frustrating to end a year you thought for sure would end with you FINALLY reaching your health goal only to find yourself not quite there. But remember, your health is a journey, not a destination.
I know many women who either want to drop body fat, start an exercise program, or eat to lower blood pressure or prevent other diseases who haven't quite reached the goals they set for themselves.

After working with women for years on their health journey, I’ve discovered three ways to help women finally make health a priority. You can do it. I believe in you.

1. Identify your "Why". The problem with reaching our goals is we focus on what we want and how we are going to get it. We want to lose 10 pounds and we are going to achieve that by doing 50 sit ups a day – or so we think. These are external goals. Those goals are fine but for lasting results you need to focus on the feeling behind the goal, internal goals, or the “why.” Society's expectation should not be your goal. Your “why” is your “why.”

Many women tell me they want to be able to get on the ground and play with grandchildren. They want to keep up with the family while on vacation. No one wants to be skinny anymore. Maybe when  we were in our 20’s or 30’s but now we just want to stay out of the hospital.

Your “why” should be so deep that everyone around you sees your health is a priority. Take some time right now to think about and identify your “why.” I bet it involves some people you love and who  need you

2. Let go of the victim mentality. Just because your dad had high blood pressure doesn’t give you an excuse to only treat it with meds. Just because your mom is overweight doesn’t mean you are destined to be also.

Make a mental shift and take control of your health. You can! You are capable, strong, smart and beautiful. And you are definitely not a victim. Sure, there are traits we are genetically apt to repeat such as bone structure or height. However, some behaviors are habits, formed in childhood, possibly leading us down the same path as our parents. But shame on us if we stay on the unhealthy path.

Do you need a mindset shift about your health? Living in health can cause a personal awakening and mental shift, allowing you to let go of a victim mentality.

I’ve seen it over and over. Women who go into a new healthy lifestyle are successful if….they have the right mindset.

3. Listen to your intuition. Women are by nature more intuitive than men. Have you given up listening to your intuition and started down a path of starvation or crazy pills and potions?  Having high energy is essential for living a healthy, high standard, life. Listen to your body. Protein is the most important macronutrient. This gives you energy. Do you get enough? Emotional eating could be caused by lack of sleep or fiber.

Are you judging or shaming yourself if you have a piece of chocolate? It’s time to live a life connected to self. Listen to your body and what it needs. The more you listen to your intuition the better life gets.
