Adventure doesn't always begin with a plane ticket.
Sometimes it begins with opening your closet.
As an image consultant for over 20 years, I've watched countless women reach for the same colors, the same styles, and the same "safe" outfits year after year. Not because they love them - but because they're comfortable.
And while there's nothing wrong with comfort, I wonder how much we're missing when we never step outside of it.
This month, as part of my August Adventure Series, I'd like to invite you on a different kind of adventure.
A fashion adventure.
Your Clothes Tell a Story
Before you say a word, your appearance has already introduced you.
The question is...
Is it telling the story you want people to hear?
Too often, I meet women who are dressing for who they used to be instead of who they are today.
Or worse, they're dressing to disappear.
They don't want to stand out.
They don't want anyone looking at them.
They've convinced themselves that this season of life is about blending in.
I don't believe that for one second.
Take One Small Fashion Risk
I'm not asking you to wear sequins to the grocery store... unless you want to!
I'm talking about small, intentional risks that remind you you're still growing.
Maybe it's...
- Wearing a color you've always admired but never thought you could pull off.
- Adding a statement necklace or a bold pair of earrings.
- Trying a jacket that gives you a little extra confidence.
- Wearing a dress instead of your usual jeans.
- Buying the shoes you've walked past three times.
- Experimenting with a new lipstick shade.
- Mixing patterns or textures you've never considered before.
Sometimes changing what's on the outside changes how we feel on the inside.
Confidence Loves Courage
One of the biggest misconceptions about confidence is whether you either have it or you don't.
I think confidence grows every time we do something that stretches us.
The first time you wear a bold color, you might feel a little self-conscious.
The second time, you'll notice someone compliments you.
The third time, you'll wonder why you waited so long.
Confidence often begins on the other side of courage.
Dress for the Life You're Creating
One of my favorite questions to ask clients is:
"Who are you becoming?"
Because your wardrobe should support that woman.
If you're building a business, dress like the leader you are becoming.
If you're starting a new chapter after retirement, let your clothing reflect your excitement for what's ahead.
If you're focusing on your health, choose clothes that celebrate your progress instead of hiding your body.
Your clothes don't create your confidence.
But they absolutely can reinforce it.
As I often say...
Your image is part of your message.
Make sure it's sending the right one.
Your Fashion Adventure Challenge
This week, I challenge you to take one fashion risk.
Not for someone else. For you.
- Wear the bright color.
- Try the new style.
- Walk into the room with your shoulders back and your head held high.
Because adventure isn't always found in faraway places.
Sometimes it's found in the woman smiling back at you in the mirror.
And who knows?
That one small fashion risk may become the beginning of a whole new level of confidence.
So, here's to trying something new, embracing who you are today, and remembering that style has no age limit.
Go have a fashionable adventure!
