When was the last time you did something just because it sounded fun?
Not because it was productive.
Not because it checked something off your to-do list.
Not because someone expected you to.
Just... because it made you smile.
As children, we were experts at having fun. We climbed trees, rode bikes until the streetlights came on, laughed until our stomachs hurt, and turned ordinary moments into extraordinary adventures.
Then adulthood arrived.
Responsibilities replaced spontaneity. Calendars became crowded. We traded curiosity for routine and began believing that fun was something we'd get back to "someday."
Listen carefully! Fun isn't frivolous. It's fuel.
It's one of the most overlooked ingredients for living a vibrant life.
Fun Keeps Us Young
Have you ever noticed how people who seem younger than their age usually have one thing in common?
They laugh often. They're curious. They're willing to try something new. They haven't lost their sense of wonder.
That's because fun does something remarkable. It lifts our spirits, reduces stress, strengthens relationships, and reminds us that life is meant to be enjoyed - not just endured.
The calendar may say we're getting older, but our attitude has a lot to say about how old we actually feel.
Adventure Doesn't Have to Be Big
When we hear the word adventure, we often picture passports, hiking mountains, or skydiving.
But some of the best adventures happen in everyday life.
It's taking a different route on your morning walk. Trying a new restaurant. Learning Mahjong (that has been sooooo much fun for me). Taking a dance class (what I want to do next). Wearing a bold color you've never had the confidence to wear before. Saying yes when a friend invites you to do something outside your comfort zone.
Sometimes adventure is simply choosing curiosity over routine.
Fun Is One of My Favorite F Words
If you've been around my community for long, you know I often talk about my five F Words:
Food. Fashion. Fitness. Friendship... and Fun.
Fun isn't something we earn after all the work is done.
It's something that gives us the energy to keep showing up.
It makes healthy habits easier. It strengthens friendships. It builds confidence. And it reminds us not to take ourselves so seriously.
Life is simply better when we laugh a little more.
Give Yourself Permission to Play
One of the greatest gifts of getting older is realizing that you don't need anyone else's permission.
You can be playful. You can be adventurous. You can learn something new. You can wear sequins to lunch if you want to. You can dance in your kitchen. You can join a class where you don't know a single person. You can become a beginner again.
And there's something incredibly freeing about that.
Your Fun Challenge This Week
I have a challenge for you.
Before this week is over, do one thing that makes you smile.
Not because it's productive. Not because it's on your calendar. Simply because it sounds fun.
Call a friend. Visit a local festival. Try paddleboarding. Bake something new. Play a game with your grandchildren. Take yourself out for ice cream.
Whatever you choose, give yourself permission to enjoy it without feeling guilty.
Because here's what I know...
We don't stop having fun because we grow older.
We grow older when we stop having fun.
So go make a memory.
Laugh a little louder.
Say "yes" a little more often.
Your heart—and everyone around you—will thank you.
