One of the greatest myths about getting older is that adventure has an expiration date.
Somewhere along the way, many women begin to believe they've missed their chance. They think adventure belongs to their twenties, career changes should have happened in their forties, and by fifty, life should simply settle into a predictable routine.
I couldn't disagree more.
In fact, I believe some of life's greatest adventures begin after 50. They did for me and I know they can for you.
The beauty of this season is that we know ourselves better. We care less about what other people think. We've survived disappointments, celebrated victories, raised families, built careers, and learned that perfection isn't nearly as important as progress.
So why stop growing now?
Adventure doesn't always require a passport. Sometimes it's as simple as saying "yes" to something you've never done before.
Maybe it's taking a strength training class for the first time. Learning Mahjong with a new group of friends. Volunteering for a cause that touches your heart. Wearing a color you've always avoided. Signing up for Toastmasters even though public speaking terrifies you. Starting a business. Going back to school. Taking piano lessons. Trying pickleball. Traveling solo. Joining a book club.
Every time we try something new, we send ourselves an important message:
I'm still growing.
That's incredibly powerful.
Why Trying Something New Matters
Our brains love novelty. Learning a new skill creates new neural pathways that help keep our minds sharp. It builds confidence because every small success reminds us that we're still capable of learning and adapting.
But the biggest benefit isn't physical or mental.
It's emotional.
Trying something new reminds us that life is still unfolding.
It shifts our focus from what we've already done to what still lies ahead.
Don't Wait Until You Feel Ready
Here's something I've learned over the years:
Confidence rarely comes before the first step.
It usually comes after.
When I first became a health coach, I certainly didn't know everything. When I joined Toastmasters, I wasn't a polished speaker. Every opportunity I've embraced has stretched me before it strengthened me.
Growth has always required a little courage.
If you wait until you're completely comfortable, you'll probably be waiting a very long time.
Small Adventures Count Too
Adventure doesn't have to be dramatic.
It can be:
- Taking a different walking trail.
- Ordering something new at your favorite restaurant.
- Introducing yourself to someone you've wanted to meet.
- Rearranging a room in your home.
- Cooking a recipe you've never tried.
- Reading a book outside your usual genre.
- Watching the sunrise instead of sleeping in.
These small moments remind us to stay curious.
And curiosity keeps us young.
Ask Yourself One Question
As you move through August, I'd love for you to ask yourself:
"What's one thing I've always wanted to try - but keep talking myself out of?"
Then make this the month you finally say yes.
Not because you're fearless.
But because your future self will thank you.
Your August Adventure Challenge
This week, choose one new experience.
It doesn't have to be big.
It simply has to be new.
Then notice how you feel afterward. My guess is you'll discover something far more valuable than a new hobby.
You'll rediscover a part of yourself that was simply waiting for permission to grow.
Because life after 50 isn't about slowing down.
It's about becoming even more fully alive.
Here's to your next adventure.
I'd love to hear about it.
