How old are you?
It’s such a simple question.
And yet, somewhere along the way, many women started treating the answer like classified information.
We whisper it.
We joke about being “29 again.”
We cringe when someone mentions our age.
We say things like, “I’m too old for that.”
But what if we stopped hiding from our age and started owning it?
Getting older isn’t something that’s happening to us. It’s something we have the privilege of experiencing.
And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend this chapter of my life wishing I were in a previous one.
I want to OWN THIS ONE.
Your Age Is Not Your Limitation
One of the biggest mistakes we can make as we get older is deciding what we can and cannot do based on the number of candles on our birthday cake.
Too old to start lifting weights? Too old to change careers? Too old to wear the dress? Too old to learn something new? Too old to travel somewhere adventurous? Too old to step on a stage? Too old to start over?
Says WHO?
Your age is information. It is not an expiration date.
There are things I can do today that I couldn’t do when I was younger - not necessarily because my body is younger or life is easier, but because I know myself better.
I know what matters to me, where I want to spend my energy and who I want around me.
And I’m much less interested in living according to someone else’s expectations.
Stop Trying to Be the Woman You Used to Be
Sometimes we spend so much time trying to “get back” to who we were that we miss the opportunity to discover who we’re becoming.
I want my old body back.
I want my old energy back.
I want to fit into the jeans I wore 20 years ago.
I want to look like I did in that picture.
But what if the goal isn’t to go backward?
What if the goal is to build the strongest, healthiest, happiest version of the woman you are TODAY?
That woman may need different nutrition.
She may need more strength training and recovery.
She may need a different style of clothing.
She may need better boundaries.
She may need more sleep.
She may need more girlfriends, more laughter and a whole lot more FUN.
And she may need to stop comparing herself to a younger version of herself who hadn’t yet lived everything she has lived.
Aging Well Takes Intention
I don’t believe in simply accepting everything that comes with getting older and saying, “Well, I guess this is what happens at my age.”
There are things we can do.
We can nourish our bodies, build muscle, move every day. We can protect our sleep, manage our stress and keep learning.
We can stay connected to people who make us laugh and lift us up.
We can wear clothes that make us feel fabulous NOW - not ten pounds from now.
And we can keep saying YES to experiences that make us feel alive.
We may not control the number.
But we have a tremendous amount of influence over how we live the number.
Maybe It's Time to Change the Question
Instead of asking:
“How do I look younger?”
Maybe we ask:
“How do I live better?”
How can I be stronger and have more energy. How can I feel more confident and take better care of myself? How can I keep growing and have more fun?
How can I make this next chapter one of my BEST chapters?
Those are questions worth asking.
OWN IT
This month, I’m calling it Own It October.
And we’re starting with age.
Say the number.
Own the years.
Own the laugh lines.
Own the lessons.
Own the mistakes.
Own the wisdom.
Own the body you have today - and take care of it.
Own your style.
Own your strength.
Own your dreams.
Own what’s next.
Because getting older doesn’t mean becoming less relevant, less adventurous, less stylish, less strong or less interesting.
You are still becoming.
And perhaps one of the greatest gifts of getting older is finally realizing:
You don’t need permission to become exactly who you want to be.
So, this October, don’t hide from your age.
OWN IT.
After all, you are what you Eat & Drink, Wear, and Think.
