My Superheroes

I’m incredibly fortunate to have a group of girlfriends we call the Superheroes.

And believe me, the name fits.

These are women who have walked through life together. We have celebrated the wonderful moments and held each other up through some incredibly difficult ones. We've laughed until our stomachs hurt, traveled together, shared meals, celebrated birthdays and milestones, and created memories I wouldn't trade for anything.

But friendship isn't just about being there for the fun stuff.

It's about the phone call when someone is hurting.

It's checking in when you know someone is struggling.

It's celebrating your friend's success without comparison.

It's reminding her who she is when she has temporarily forgotten.

That's what my Superhero friends mean to me.

Girlfriends Matter - Especially as We Get Older

I believe friendships become even more precious as we move through different seasons of life.

Our lives change. Our families change. Careers change. Our bodies change. We experience celebrations, transitions, disappointments and losses.

And through it all, having women beside you who understand your history, appreciate who you are today and encourage who you are becoming is a gift.

The right girlfriends don't compete with your light.

They help you shine brighter.

They encourage you to try the new thing. Wear the dress. Take the trip. Make the phone call. Chase the dream. Take care of yourself. Laugh at yourself. Get back up when life knocks you down.

And sometimes they simply sit beside you and remind you that you don't have to have everything figured out.

But Friendship Requires Showing Up

Recently on our trip to Cape Cod, the Superhero’s weren’t sure we would pull it off. Family members get sick, some start new jobs. But we did it! And everyone of them will tell you it was 100% worth it.

Here's the thing about great friendships: they don't happen accidentally.

We have to nurture them.

We get busy. Our calendars fill up. Family needs us. Work needs us. Life needs us.

It's easy to think, I'll call her next week.

And suddenly, months have passed.

Showing up doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it's a text that says, Thinking about you. Sometimes it's grabbing a cup of coffee. Sometimes it's remembering an important day. Sometimes it's making the effort to plan the girls' trip instead of just talking about taking one.

And sometimes it's donating to your friend's Goldendoodle because you know how much that crazy dog and her mission mean to her. ❤️

My friends certainly showed up for me - and for Nala - during Give for Good.

And I won't forget it.

Who Can You Show Up For?

As part of Show Up September, I want to challenge you to think about the women in your life.

Who encourages you?

Who makes you laugh?

Who believes in you?

Who has stood beside you during a difficult season?

And perhaps most importantly:

Who might need YOU to show up for her right now?

Don't wait for the perfect opportunity.

Send the text.

Make the call.

Schedule the lunch.

Plan the girls' weekend.

Celebrate her win.

Sit beside her in the hard stuff.

Tell her how much her friendship means to you.

Because one of the greatest gifts we can give another woman is simply letting her know:

You don't have to do this alone. I'm here.

To my Superheroes and to every friend who showed up for Nala during Give for Good - thank you.

You reminded me that when women show up for one another, pretty incredible things happen.

So, this September, don't just show up for your goals.

Don't just show up for your health.

Don't just show up for yourself.

Show up for your friends.

Because life is so much better when we have people beside us cheering us on.

And if you're lucky enough to have a few Superheroes in your life, make sure they know it. ❤️
