We tend to think it’s the BIG decisions that change our lives.
The new job.
The big move.
The relationship.
The decision to finally get healthy.
The moment we decide, “Okay, something has to change.”
And yes, those decisions matter.
But I’ve come to believe that our lives are shaped just as much by the little choices we make every single day.
The ones nobody sees.
Do I get up and move my body, or hit snooze?
Do I start my meal with protein, or grab whatever is easiest?
Do I wear the outfit that makes me feel confident, or save it for “something special”?
Do I call the friend I’ve been thinking about, or tell myself I’ll do it later?
Do I say YES to an opportunity that scares me a little, or stay where I’m comfortable?
Do I spend ten more minutes scrolling - or ten minutes doing something that actually fills me up?
Little choices. Big impact.
Your Choices Are Taking You Somewhere
Here’s what we sometimes forget:
Every choice is taking us in a direction. One workout probably isn’t going to transform your body. One healthy meal isn’t going to transform your health. One conversation isn’t going to transform a friendship. One brave YES isn’t going to transform your career.
But keep making those choices?
Now we’re talking.
Because little decisions have a way of becoming habits. And those habits eventually become the way we live.
The beautiful part is that we don’t have to overhaul our entire lives to start changing them.
We can simply make the next choice.
Choose the Woman You Want to Become
I think this becomes especially important as we get older.
There can be a tendency to start letting age make some of our choices for us.
“I’m too old to wear that.”
“I’m too old to start something new.”
“I’ve never been athletic.”
“I’m just not good at that.”
“That’s just the way I am.”
Really?
Or is that simply a choice we’ve made so many times that it now feels like the truth?
At 66, I’m more convinced than ever that we get to keep choosing who we want to become.
We can choose strength. We can choose confidence. We can choose adventure. We can choose friendships. We can choose to take care of ourselves. We can choose to learn something new. We can choose to walk into the room instead of standing on the sidelines.
We can even choose to TWIRL!
And no, we won’t make the “right” choice every time.
Thank goodness perfection isn’t required.
One Choice Doesn't Define You
You skipped your workout?
Okay.
You ate the dessert?
Enjoy it.
You spent the day on the couch?
Maybe you needed it.
You said no when you wish you had said yes?
There will be another opportunity.
Owning your choices isn't about beating yourself up over the choices you wish you had made differently.
It’s about recognizing that you get another choice.
The next meal. The next morning. The next invitation. The next conversation. The next opportunity. The next time you look in the mirror.
Instead of saying, “Well, I blew it,” ask:
“What choice can I make next that moves me in the direction I want to go?”
That feels a whole lot more powerful to me.
Look at Your F Words
If you’ve been around me for a while, you know I believe so much of our life comes back to my favorite F Words.
FOOD: What am I choosing to put on my plate most of the time?
FITNESS: Am I choosing to move, lift, walk and challenge my body so I can keep doing the things I love?
FASHION: Am I dressing the woman I am TODAY - or hiding her?
FUN: Am I actually making room for joy, adventure and a little silliness?
FRIENDSHIP: Am I showing up for the people who matter to me?
None of these require one giant, life-changing decision.
They require lots of little ones.
Own Your Next Choice
So, as we continue to OWN IT this month, I want you to think about your choices.
Not the ones you made ten years ago.
Not even the ones you made yesterday.
The ones you’re making today.
What is one little decision you could make that your future self might thank you for?
Take the walk. Eat the protein. Put on the outfit. Call the friend. Sign up for the class. Send the email. Say yes. Say no.
Ask for what you need.
Try something new.
Your life doesn’t change only in the big, dramatic moments.
Sometimes it changes quietly - in a thousand little moments when you choose what matters to you.
So today, don’t worry about changing everything.
Just own your next choice.
Because that little decision?
It might be bigger than you think.
You are what you Eat & Drink, Wear, and Think.
And I would add one more:
You become what you repeatedly choose.
